"Yeah but, what can ya do" ... "Eh, they're all the same" ... "My vote doesn't count" ... "Oh, it doesn't matter who is in charge" Honestly ladies & gentlemen, to put it bluntly... ‘apathy ain’t it’. You cannot meekly bow your head, throw up your arms in disgust, and do nothing… it’s our Government and its high-time we took it back. The US was intended to be a Government of the People, by the People, and for the People; and there are 10 things you CAN do. Firstly, register to vote. Second, show up on Election Day and actually vote. Your vote does count; the only way it won’t is if you don’t cast it. Third, understand that this Election cycle's paramount issue is the restoration of ‘Checks & Balances’. The only way to counter this overly authoritarian Administration is break up the Republican Party's monopoly on the Government. That can only be done by voting Democratic. Fourth, educate yourself about the candidates during the primaries. If the Democrat in your District or State is not upholding your values, not supporting ‘We the People’ and instead is in the pocked of lobbyists, large corporations, or appears to be voting in lockstep with the neo-con faction of the Republican Party… then support the challenger; such is the case in Connecticut right now; where Ned Lamont is offering a fresh alternative to the politics of Joe Lieberman. Fifth, we need to restore Government to ‘We the People’. If you agree that people not corporations should be represented then support and vote for grassroots progressive candidates, vote for the ‘new kid on the block’ who has not been corrupted by big lobbying money and refuses to accept their donations. Sixth, contribute to those grassroots candidates and Netroots websites that support their ideology. Even if you only send 5 bucks, it all adds up. For example, the neo-con my get one $10,000 donation from a big corporation but, if 25,000 of us each send the progressive candidate 5 bucks… we just raised $125,000; every little bit counts! Seventh, write to your Congressman, write to your Senators, and tell them what’s on your mind. Tell them about the issues that are important to you. They do read emails, they do listen… they just have to actually hear from you. Not sure who your reps are? Eighth, join political actions sites, such as ours, moveon.org, Democrats.org or any of a host of others here. Read and post to the blogs, fill out the opinion forms when we send them out. Ninth, find your political passion. Be it healthcare, the economy, the environment, helping the poor, electing progressive candidates... or whatever else gets you motivated, and pursue that political passion. Tenth, speak to your family, friends and co-workers, tell them about getting active. If they say "Yeah but, what can ya do" ... "Eh, they're all the same" ... "My vote doesn't count" ... "Oh, it doesn't matter who is in charge" … below are a few talking points for you. If you think “they’re all the same” remember this… the Republican controlled Congress has steadfastly refused to Also, the Republicans filibustered 50 of Bill Clinton’s judicial nominees but, when the Democrats attempted to filibuster just 10 of George Bush’s judicial nominees... the Republicans threatened to eliminate the filibuster! Under Clinton/Gore (the Democrats) we had the largest surplus of money in the treasury in our Nation's history, however under Bush/Cheney (the Republicans) we currently have one of the largest deficits in our nations history. Under Clinton/Gore we had stronger EPA polices and better protection of the environment, however Under Clinton/Gore FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Administration) was overseen by officials with background in disaster response, it was independent, it worked and it worked well. Under Bush/Cheney FEMA was absorbed into the Department of Homeland Security, a former Siberian Horse Commissionaire was placed in charge (seriously), it stopped working, which resulted in the Hurricane Katrina fiasco. Clinton/Gore inherited a 13.7% poverty rate, enacted multiple policy changes and got it down to 13.1% by the end of their first term. They continued their policy of helping the poor and dropped poverty down to 11.1% by the end of their second term. Bush/Cheney inherited that 11.1% poverty rating and poverty has since increased to 12.1%. Lastly, if you are a woman, and believe as we do that abortions should be few and far between but remain safe and legal… just look at what the Bush Administration is doing to reverse that. They have stacked the Supreme Court with two new justices who both are anti-choice and there are now several southern States were women can’t get abortions even in cases of rape or incest. Remember, the President not only sets the agenda, he appoints Federal & Supreme Court Justices and then the Senate confirms them to life-time appointments; it does matter who is in charge, it does matter who you vote for, they are not all

Anthony Congiano (D) When the truth is, we have all the power… ‘We the People’ just need to rise from the comfort of our chairs, pound the black tar of the streets and We are not condemned to only dream the dream, all we need to is jointly open our eyes and exact it. We have the sword of warriors at our feet; all we need do is pick it up and claim it. ‘We the People’ cannot be pushed aside and silenced like sheep if collectively we choose to stand and roar like lions. These economic royalists can only win if we choose to not get active." Anthony Congiano (D) Anthony Congiano (D) Anthony Congiano (D) |
